Rawalpindi Ring Road Transport Terminals Plan
The Punjab government has announced a major transport restructuring initiative under the Rawalpindi Ring Road Transport Terminals plan, aimed at shifting key bus and goods terminals away from the city and onto the Rawalpindi Ring Road. The move is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, limit heavy vehicle entry into urban areas, and improve overall transport efficiency in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Under the plan, the Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, along with 44 public transport terminals, goods transport terminals, and the Islamabad fruit and vegetable market, will be relocated to designated sites along the Ring Road. Once implemented, Pirwadhai will serve as a central hub for local bus services between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, offering affordable commuter fares.
The new transport layout introduces a structured routing system for intercity and provincial traffic. Long-distance transport from Peshawar will be directed to a terminal near Islamabad International Airport. Vehicles arriving from Punjab districts will use Ring Road access points, while transport from Azad Kashmir via Murree will be routed toward Bharakahu. Traffic from other regions will enter through Rawat.
Originally approved in 2004, the terminal relocation plan faced long delays but has now regained momentum alongside the completion of key sections of the Rawalpindi Ring Road. Authorities expect additional segments near Bharakahu to become operational soon, enabling full implementation of the plan.
Once the terminals are functional, public transport services will operate feeder routes into city centers, ensuring smooth passenger movement without allowing heavy vehicles to enter congested urban zones.
The Rawalpindi Ring Road Transport Terminals initiative is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance commuter safety, reduce road damage, and support long-term urban mobility planning for the twin cities.
