Lahore Tree Belt Smog Solution Underway
The Punjab government has launched an ambitious initiative to develop a 112-kilometre tree belt around Lahore as part of its ongoing efforts to fight the city’s severe smog problem. The project, called “Lungs of Lahore,” will span 1,711 acres and include the plantation of more than 4.8 million trees across three phases.
In the first phase, a 59-kilometre stretch of forest will be developed on 1,210 acres within one year, benefiting nearly 20 million residents. The next phases will expand the belt by an additional 31 km and 22 km, eventually forming a complete green ring around Lahore.
Tree species selected for the project include Jamun, Kachnar, Guava, Pulkan, Arjun, Gul Nishtar, and Jatropha, all known for their ability to absorb pollutants, provide shade, and adapt to the local climate.
The initiative arrives at a critical time when Lahore continues to face dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, often exceeding 400, placing it among the world’s most polluted cities. The Lahore Tree Belt Smog project aims to significantly cut particulate matter, curb urban heat, and prevent uncontrolled urban sprawl.
Beyond environmental impact, the project also emphasizes sustainable urban planning, ecological restoration, and long-term public health improvement. Once completed, the tree belt is expected to serve as a natural air filter and create a greener, healthier Lahore for future generations.
